Apple iPhone emergency service updates
Overview
Apple has introduced new emergency communication capabilities for iPhone users. In Brazil, the company and RapidSOS launched the ‘Emergency SOS Live Video’ feature, which allows users to share encrypted live video feeds with emergency dispatchers during 190 calls. The availability of this feature depends on local emergency communication centers adopting the RapidSOS UNITE platform.
Separately, Apple announced a one-year extension for free satellite connectivity on iPhone 14, 15, and 16 models. This extension allows users to continue using Emergency SOS and text messaging via satellite in areas without cellular coverage. These services are powered by Globalstar, a company currently being acquired by Amazon.
