Strawberry market faces volatility due to rapid crop maturation

The soft fruit market is experiencing significant volatility due to warm and dry weather, which has caused crops to ripen much faster than anticipated. This accelerated maturation has disrupted initial supply and demand forecasts, leading to shortages in the strawberry market for approximately four weeks.

Aad van Dijk of The Greenery reports that prices have fluctuated wildly, with spot trading prices for strawberries shifting from 2 to 5 euros within a few days. While growers have mitigated some issues through early harvesting and strict cold chain management, the balance between supply and demand remains fragile.

In response to these conditions, there is a notable shift in strawberry varieties. Many producers are returning to the classic Elsanta variety for autumn cultivation, as everbearing varieties have proven insufficiently productive under low-light conditions. This shift is expected to create a different market dynamic heading into November.

Additionally, the agricultural sector is facing broader challenges. Climate uncertainty and the reduction of phytosanitary tools are transforming the role of nurseries. Producers are increasingly prioritizing plant resilience—specifically the ability to withstand heatwaves and water stress—over simple precocity to ensure more predictable yields.
