Strawberry market supply and price volatility

The strawberry market is experiencing significant volatility driven by warm and dry weather, which has caused crops to ripen much faster than anticipated. This accelerated maturation has disrupted supply and demand forecasts, resulting in shortages lasting approximately four weeks.

Aad van Dijk of The Greenery reports that spot trading prices have fluctuated wildly, shifting from “2 to 5 euros within a few days.” While growers have attempted to mitigate these issues through early harvesting and strict cold chain management, the balance between supply and demand remains fragile.

In response to these conditions, producers are shifting strawberry varieties, with many returning to the classic Elsanta variety for autumn cultivation because everbearing varieties have been insufficiently productive under low-light conditions. This shift is expected to alter market dynamics heading into November.

Broader agricultural challenges include climate uncertainty and a reduction in phytosanitary tools. Consequently, nurseries are increasingly prioritizing plant resilience—specifically the ability to withstand heatwaves and water stress—over simple precocity to ensure more predictable yields.
