Apple introduces custom EQ for AirPods in new firmware update

Apple has released a firmware update for AirPods that introduces a long-requested custom equalizer (EQ) feature. The update, released alongside iOS 27, allows users to adjust the sound profile by modifying three specific bands: lows, mids, and highs.

The feature is located within the “Audio and Routing” section of the Settings app. To assist with tuning, users can play Apple Music directly within the Settings menu to hear adjustments in real time. While the system is a basic three-band equalizer, it provides more direct control than previous methods that required third-party apps or indirect adjustments via music services.

This update is compatible with all AirPods models equipped with the H2 chip, including the AirPods Pro 2, AirPods Pro 3, AirPods 4, and AirPods Max 2. Other improvements included in the update for compatible models feature sliders for Adaptive Audio and enhanced integration for GymKit and Precision Finding on the Apple Watch.
