Apple introduces iPhone Handoff for iOS 27

Apple is introducing a new feature called ‘iPhone Handoff’ in the upcoming iOS 27, which allows a single phone number to be used across two different iPhones. This feature is designed to help users who manage both personal and work devices by allowing calls and messages to follow them between devices without requiring an additional subscription.

Technical details discovered in testing suggest the system utilizes eSIM technology. A primary device acts as the main unit, while a second device is assigned a ‘companion-eSIM’ linked to the same number. This companion eSIM acts as a technical copy of the existing line rather than a separate subscription. While the user can switch between devices, mobile settings are managed from the primary unit, and location services like ‘Find My’ will track the device actively using the number.

The availability of this feature depends heavily on mobile carrier support. Initial compatibility has been confirmed for T-Mobile in the United States and Deutsche Telekom in Germany. It remains unclear when other international carriers will adopt the model.
