Apple iOS 27 iPhone Handoff feature development
Overview
Apple is preparing to launch ‘iPhone Handoff’ as part of the upcoming iOS 27 release. The feature enables a single phone number to be shared across two different iPhones by designating one as a ‘main device’ and the other as a ‘companion device’. This functionality is intended to assist users managing both personal and work devices by allowing calls and messages to follow them between devices without requiring an additional subscription.
Technical details indicate the system relies on eSIM technology. The primary device retains the main eSIM, while the companion device receives a specialized ‘companion-eSIM’ linked to the same number. To use the service, devices must be signed into the same Apple Account, have Messages in iCloud enabled, and be compatible with iPhone 11 or later (or iPhone SE 2nd Gen or later). Setup requires both devices to be connected to Wi-Fi and in close proximity.
Implementation requires mobile carrier support. In the United States, T-Mobile is the first confirmed carrier, with an expected monthly cost of approximately $5. In Germany, Deutsche Telekom will offer the service through its ‘MultiSIM’ offering. While initial support is limited, other carriers such as Verizon in the US and EE in the UK are expected to support the technology later this year.
