Apple iOS 27 to introduce iPhone Handoff for dual-device number sharing

Apple is preparing a new feature for iOS 27 called ‘iPhone Handoff,’ which allows users to share a single phone number across two different iPhones. The feature was briefly mentioned during WWDC 2026 and has recently been detailed through developer simulations using Xcode 27.

Under this system, a user designates one iPhone as the ‘main device’ and another as a ‘companion device.’ The primary eSIM remains on the main iPhone, while the companion device receives a specialized companion eSIM linked to the same number. The service automatically switches to whichever device the user unlocks, with a notification appearing in the Dynamic Island to confirm the transfer.

While the main iPhone retains control over cellular settings, location sharing via ‘Find My’ will follow the device currently using the active number. The functionality requires both devices to run iOS 27 and necessitates support from mobile carriers to provide the companion eSIM infrastructure. T-Mobile in the United States and Deutsche Telekom in Germany are expected to be among the first providers to support the service.
