Apple M6 chip plans focus on AI and new device rollout

Apple is planning a strategic rollout for its next-generation M6 silicon, which is expected to focus heavily on enhancing on-device artificial intelligence capabilities. Reports indicate that the M6 chip may not follow the previous pattern of offering Pro and Max variants, potentially leaving professional users on M5 Pro and M5 Max chips until the M7 series arrives.

The M6 chip is expected to debut in the Mac mini, followed by the 14-inch MacBook Pro and 24-inch iMac in October 2026. The MacBook Air may receive an update in early 2027. Beyond computers, the M6 is slated for the iPad Pro and future iPad Air models.

A key technical highlight of the M6 is the rumored dual 16-core Neural Engine architecture. This design is intended to support Apple’s diverse AI foundation models, such as the AFM 3 Core and AFM 3 Core Advanced, by allowing different engines to handle specific AI tasks simultaneously. The hardware is also expected to provide native support for FP8 to improve the speed and efficiency of large language models (LLMs) while reducing memory consumption.
