Apple plans OLED iMac launch for 2029

Apple is reportedly planning to transition its iMac lineup from LCD to OLED technology, with a potential launch as early as 2029. To achieve this, the company is in discussions with major display manufacturers, including Samsung Display and LG Display, to secure large-area OLED panels.

LG Display is currently developing a specialized five-layer stack architecture to meet Apple’s specific requirements for brightness and longevity. This new design, which includes a third blue OLED emitter layer, aims to mitigate burn-in issues and improve electrical distribution across high-density pixels. While this advanced architecture offers superior performance, it involves increased material costs and more complex manufacturing processes.

Samsung Display is also reportedly working on a QD-OLED solution to compete for these contracts. Production of the necessary display panels is expected to begin by the end of 2028, following the completion of development phases.
