Apple plans OLED iMac launch for 2029 using advanced 5-stack panels

Apple is reportedly planning to introduce OLED technology to the iMac, with the first 24-inch model potentially launching in 2029. To address the specific challenges of desktop computing, such as static user interface elements that increase the risk of image burn-in, Apple is looking toward advanced display solutions.

LG Display is currently developing a new generation of 5-stack OLED panels specifically designed to meet these requirements. Unlike current 4-stack architectures, this 5-stack design incorporates a third blue-emitting layer. This technological shift aims to provide higher peak brightness—targeted at approximately 600 nits—longer panel lifespan, and significantly improved resistance to permanent image retention.

While Apple has discussed panel requirements with both LG Display and Samsung Display, manufacturing large-scale, high-density OLED panels remains a technical and financial challenge. The proposed displays are expected to feature a pixel density of approximately 218 pixels per inch.
