Apple plans OLED upgrades for iPad and Mac products through 2029

Apple is reportedly planning a significant transition to OLED display technology across its product lineup over the next several years. According to reports from TrendForce and other industry sources, the company aims to integrate OLED panels into various devices, including the iPad mini, MacBook Pro, iPad Air, iMac, and MacBook Air between 2026 and 2029.

A key technical advancement in this transition is the move toward the BT. 2020 color gamut. While current high-end displays often rely on the DCI-P3 standard, Apple is targeting 95% coverage of the BT. 2020 color space for future MacBook Pro, iPad Pro, and iMac models. This shift would allow for more lifelike color accuracy, as BT. 2020 encompasses a much wider range of naturally occurring colors compared to DCI-P3 or sRGB.

The rollout is expected to be tiered based on product positioning. For instance, the iPad Air may utilize single-layer OLED panels, whereas the iPad Pro is expected to feature more advanced dual-layer OLED technology with ProMotion high refresh rates. Potential suppliers for these panels include Samsung Display and various Chinese manufacturers.
