Apple plans MacBook lineup overhaul with OLED and new models

Market research firm Omdia has released a detailed roadmap for Apple’s future MacBook lineup, indicating a significant shift in display technology and product segmentation. Apple is expected to introduce OLED-equipped MacBook Pro models (14.3 and 16.3 inches) between late 2026 and early 2027. To manage costs, Apple may continue selling existing Mini-LED MacBook Pro models alongside the new OLED versions until at least 2028.

A new high-end category, potentially named ‘MacBook Ultra,’ is rumored to feature touchscreen OLED displays and could potentially utilize the M5 Ultra chip, though some analysts suggest it may be limited to M5 Pro and M5 Max. Additionally, a new intermediate 13.8-inch OLED MacBook is projected for 2029, positioned between the LCD-based MacBook Air and the high-end Pro models. This mid-range model would likely use a single-stack hybrid OLED rather than the more expensive tandem OLED technology.

In the entry-level segment, reports indicate a second-generation ‘MacBook Neo’ is planned for 2027. This model is expected to feature an A19 Pro chip, 12GB of RAM, and new color options to support enhanced on-device AI capabilities. Conversely, Apple has reportedly abandoned plans for a foldable MacBook and larger-format OLED models in the 14.4 to 16.1-inch range.
