Apple seeks expedited discovery in OpenAI trade secret lawsuit

Apple is seeking an expedited process in its trade secret lawsuit against OpenAI to gain earlier access to evidence. The company has requested a 30-day deadline for substantive responses to written requests and a 50-day timeline for a corporate representative to testify on behalf of OpenAI.

The litigation, which began in July 2026, involves allegations that two former Apple employees, Chang Liu and Tang Yew Tan, transferred undisclosed hardware technology trade secrets to OpenAI. Apple is also seeking injunctive relief to prevent the use or sharing of the information in question.

OpenAI has denied the allegations, arguing that Apple’s security and employee departure practices weaken its claims. The defense also contends that Apple’s request for early discovery is overly broad and burdensome, suggesting it could allow a competitor early access to product plans.
