Apple filed a lawsuit on July 10, 2026 in the U.S. Northern District of California accusing OpenAI of stealing Apple trade secrets through former employees Chang Liu and Tang Yew Tan. Apple is requesting a preliminary injunction to bar OpenAI and the two ex‑employees from accessing, using or disclosing any Apple confidential information and has asked the court to order forensic imaging of OpenAI’s devices, cloud storage, email and Slack accounts. Apple also alleges that more than 400 former Apple staff now work at OpenAI and that its investigation has uncovered eleven additional ex‑employees who may have been involved in the alleged theft. OpenAI responded with a blog post titled “Apple is getting this wrong,” calling the suit “careless, aggressive and oddly personal” and denying that it possesses any Apple trade secrets. OpenAI says the claim of “residual access” stems from Apple’s own access‑management practices and that Apple’s lawyers mistakenly emailed the wrong Asian surname in February.

The dispute has drawn attention to the emerging hardware ambitions of OpenAI and could affect the companies’ product roadmaps and market perception.
