Apple to introduce iPhone Handoff feature in iOS 27
Apple is set to introduce a new feature called ‘iPhone Handoff’ as part of the upcoming iOS 27 release, expected later this month. The functionality allows a single phone number to operate across two different iPhones.
Based on technical demonstrations, the system utilizes eSIM technology rather than physical SIM cloning. Users designate one iPhone as the primary device, which retains the main eSIM, while a second device acts as a companion receiving a companion eSIM tied to the same number. The phone number automatically follows the device that is currently unlocked and in active use, with switching notifications appearing in the Dynamic Island.
While the primary device maintains control over cellular settings, the feature is dependent on mobile carrier support. T-Mobile in the United States and Deutsche Telekom in Germany are identified as potential early adopters of this technology.
