Apple to overhaul EU App Store following regulatory pressure FAST-MOVING
Apple is set to overhaul its App Store operations in the European Union following regulatory pressure and a 500 million euro fine imposed by the European Commission in April 2025 for Digital Markets Act violations.
Starting October 1, Apple will implement a unified set of terms for developers. These changes allow for greater flexibility in app distribution, enabling software to be downloaded via websites and third-party marketplaces in addition to the official App Store.
Key financial adjustments include the replacement of the controversial Core Technology Fee with a Core Technology Commission, which will charge a five percent fee on digital transactions for apps distributed outside the App Store. Apple will also eliminate the Initial Acquisition Fee and the Store Services Fee. These measures aim to address competition concerns regarding Apple’s role as a gatekeeper in the digital market.
