Apple regulatory compliance in the European Union
Overview
Apple is implementing significant operational changes in the European Union in response to regulatory scrutiny and antitrust investigations.
Following an investigation by Germany’s Federal Cartel Office, Apple agreed to modify its App Tracking Transparency (ATT) framework. To ensure visual and linguistic neutrality, the company will redesign consent pop-ups by removing discouraging symbols and the word ‘Tracking’ from selection pages. These changes, which will be monitored by a trustee for seven years, also allow developers to combine Apple’s consent requests with their own and re-request consent after one year.
Separately, following a 500 million euro fine from the European Commission for Digital Markets Act violations, Apple announced an overhaul of its App Store operations effective October 1. The company will allow software to be downloaded via websites and third-party marketplaces. Financial structures are also being adjusted, including the replacement of the Core Technology Fee with a Core Technology Commission, which will charge a five percent fee on digital transactions for apps distributed outside the official App Store.
