Apple Vision Pro finds medical success despite consumer market struggles
While the Apple Vision Pro has struggled to gain traction in the consumer market due to its high price point of approximately 4,000 euros, it is finding significant success in the medical field.
In clinical settings, the headset is being used to enhance surgical precision. A study by UC San Diego Health and the Shiley Eye Institute involving 32 endoscopic procedures found that surgeons using the Vision Pro completed operations in an average of 34.4 minutes, compared to 42.7 minutes using traditional monitors—a 19 percent increase in efficiency. Surgeons also reported reduced physical strain and a preference for the headset's spatial display.
Research from Germany has played a key role in this development. Engineers from the Fraunhofer Institute (IWU) and the University Hospital Leipzig developed surgical navigation software that projects 3D MRI and CT data directly into a surgeon's field of view. This collaboration led to direct engagement with Apple leadership in Cupertino to integrate the software into the Vision Pro hardware.
