Apple Vision Pro utility expands in medical field

Researchers at UC San Diego conducted a study comparing the use of the Apple Vision Pro mixed-reality headset to conventional monitors during endoscopic dacryocystorhinostomy, a tear-duct procedure.

The study found that surgeons using the headset completed procedures 19% faster than those using traditional monitors, with average times of 34.4 minutes compared to 42.7 minutes. While the device has faced challenges in the consumer market due to a high price point of nearly 4,000 euros, its utility in the medical field is expanding. In Germany, researchers from the Fraunhofer Institute for Machine Tools and Forming Technology (IWU) and the University Hospital Leipzig have developed surgical navigation software that projects high-resolution 3D MRI and CT data into a surgeon's field of vision. This development reportedly led to an invitation from Apple CEO Tim Cook to integrate the software with the Vision Pro at Apple's headquarters. The growing role of spatial computing in medicine was further emphasized at the First European Spatial Computing Healthcare Summit in Leipzig.
