Apple Vision Pro reduces surgical procedure time by 19%

A study conducted by researchers at UC San Diego has found that surgeons using the Apple Vision Pro headset as their primary display completed tear-duct procedures 19% faster than those using traditional operating-room monitors.

The research, published in AJO International, compared 16 endoscopic dacryocystorhinostomy procedures performed with the headset against 16 performed with a standard monitor. The headset-assisted cases averaged 34.4 minutes, while the monitor group averaged 42.7 minutes. All procedures were completed successfully without complications.

By projecting endoscopic video directly into the surgeon's field of vision, the headset eliminates the need to repeatedly turn the head toward a distant monitor. This setup was associated with lower surgeon-reported workload and improved physical ergonomics, as measured by NASA’s Task Load Index. All five clinicians involved in the study expressed a preference for the headset-based approach. Researchers also noted that the headset configuration is more compact and represents a significantly lower capital cost compared to standard endoscopic operating-room systems.
