Apple Wallet expanding digital driver's licenses to four more U.S. states

Apple Wallet is expanding its digital driver's license and state ID feature to four additional U.S. states: North Carolina, Oklahoma, Utah, and Virginia. While code suggests upcoming support for Oklahoma, Utah, and Virginia, North Carolina has a specific rollout plan.

North Carolina's Division of Motor Vehicles will first launch a dedicated NC Wallet app in December. Integration with Apple Wallet, Google Wallet, and Samsung Wallet is expected to follow in early 2027. Once available, Apple Wallet IDs can be used at TSA checkpoints in over 250 U.S. airports for domestic travel, including Charlotte Douglas and Raleigh-Durham International Airports.

Digital IDs are intended as a supplemental option rather than a replacement for physical cards, as they are not currently accepted by all businesses or law enforcement. The technology allows users to authenticate via iPhone and control specific information shared during identity verification.
