Expansion of digital driver’s licenses in US and Mexico
Overview
The expansion of digital driver’s licenses in the United States and Mexico continues to accelerate. In the U.S., Virginia has officially become the 15th state to support digital driver’s licenses and state IDs within the Apple Wallet app. Residents with compatible devices, such as iPhone 8 or later, can add credentials by scanning their physical IDs.
Further expansion is anticipated as Apple Wallet prepares to add support for Oklahoma and Utah. North Carolina is also moving toward integration; the state’s Division of Motor Vehicles plans to launch a dedicated NC Wallet app in December, with integration into Apple, Google, and Samsung Wallets expected in early 2027. Once implemented, these digital IDs can be used at TSA checkpoints in over 250 U.S. airports, including Charlotte Douglas and Raleigh-Durham International.
In a separate development for Android users, Ohio has launched digital driver’s licenses and state IDs within Google Wallet, marking the 12th region to support the feature. This digital ID is compatible with TSA checkpoints, Ohio state government buildings, casinos, and participating local businesses, utilizing encrypted NFC, Bluetooth, or QR code scanning. State officials note that digital IDs are intended as a supplemental option and still recommend carrying physical cards for traffic stops.
In Mexico, the Secretariat of Mobility (Semovi) maintains that the digital driver’s license available via the CDMX app holds nationwide legal validity. Since October 2022, holders can obtain a permanent digital credential through an online portal for a fee of 1,500 pesos.
