Applied Materials unveils $5 billion EPIC semiconductor R&D center
Applied Materials has unveiled its EPIC (Equipment and Process Innovation and Commercialization) Center, a $5 billion semiconductor research and development facility located in Sunnyvale, California. The massive 600,000-square-foot facility is designed to accelerate the transition of new semiconductor technologies from research to mass production.
The center operates through a collaborative model involving major industry players. Founding partners include Samsung Electronics, SK hynix, TSMC, Intel, and Micron. Other innovation partners include Broadcom, Kioxia, and Advantest, while academic institutions such as UCLA and Stanford University serve as research partners. This collaboration aims to reduce the typical 10-to-12-year development cycle for new chip technologies to as little as six years.
Research at the EPIC Center will focus on critical areas for the AI era, including 3D integration, advanced packaging, and new materials to improve energy efficiency and computing performance. By housing material researchers, equipment manufacturers, and chipmakers in a single location, Applied Materials intends to shorten learning cycles and ensure that new technologies are optimized for high-yield manufacturing before they reach production fabs.
