An intense heatwave is sweeping Central Europe, with temperatures in Hungary projected to top 42 °C and many Romanian counties placed under red‑code heat alerts. The Hungarian national chief medical officer extended the third‑degree heat alert nationwide for an additional 24 hours, warning that the elderly, children, pregnant women and people with cardiovascular disease are at heightened risk. Health officials urged regular fluid intake, shade and limited outdoor activity during peak heat.

In response to the heat, Hungarian authorities offered free afternoon swimming for residents of Székesfehérvár and Szolnok between 3 August and 14 August, while Prime Minister Peter Magyar announced voluntary electricity‑consumption cuts of more than 400 MW to protect the power grid, which is strained by the heat at the Paks nuclear plant. Simultaneously, the Danube fell to historically low levels on 2 August and the Tisza Lake dropped below 700 cm on 4 August, reflecting severe drought conditions. July 2026 recorded 73 % less rainfall than the long‑term average, marking one of the driest months on record for Hungary.

Romania has issued red‑code alerts for several counties, including Arad, Bihor, Satu Mare, Olt and others, and imposed road restrictions for heavy trucks. Additional orange and yellow alerts cover further regions as temperatures are expected to reach up to 41 °C, with night‑time tropical conditions.
