Overview

Weather patterns across the Balkans and Central Europe have transitioned through cycles of extreme heat, severe storms, and seasonal shifts. Following the extreme heat and drought of August 2026, the region entered September with persistent summer-like conditions mixed with high atmospheric instability. In early September, extreme weather caused fatalities and significant infrastructure damage in Italy, Slovenia, and Bosnia and Herzegovina. In Italy, two deaths were confirmed—one in Sinalunga due to wind and rain, and another in Latisana after a car was trapped in a flooded underpass. Early October saw unseasonably warm and sunny weather in parts of Bulgaria, such as Plovdiv, and Moldova, where temperatures reached up to 26°C. However, these periods were interrupted by cold atmospheric fronts. In Bulgaria, a cold front brought heavy rainfall and thunderstorms, triggering orange-level warnings in regions including Varna and Burgas, with rainfall reaching 35–65 liters per square meter. In the mountains, rain transitioned to snow at altitudes above 1,200–1,500 meters. By late October, weather patterns in Romania and Moldova shifted toward colder, cloudier conditions with frequent rain and temperature drops, while some Bulgarian forecasts predicted a return to warmer-than-average conditions before a substantial cooling period in early November.
