Balkans weather: extreme heat, storms, and wildfire risks
Overview
Weather patterns across the Balkans and Central Europe continue to fluctuate between extreme heat and intense atmospheric instability.
In Italy, severe thunderstorms and heavy rainfall have caused flooding and fallen trees, with Potenza reporting 56 mm of rain in under an hour and Liguria seeing 85.4 mm in one hour. Slovenia has issued orange alerts for the southwest, where heavy rain and wind could lead to flash floods and have already disrupted rail transport and power supplies. Destructive winds and hail are also expected across the Adriatic, including Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Romania is transitioning from intense heatwaves, with temperatures reaching 33°C to 36°C in regions like Banat and Oltenia, to severe storms. From September 11 through September 13, meteorologists warn of torrential rains, lightning, and wind gusts of 50-60 km/h. In areas like Satu Mare, temperatures are expected to drop sharply from near 30°C to approximately 18°C during this transition.
Bulgaria is experiencing a final period of high temperatures, with highs between 30°C and 37°C in Sofia and Veliko Tarnovo. However, a cold air mass is expected to bring a sharp reversal this weekend, bringing thunderstorms, heavy rainfall, and localized hail, particularly to the Rila-Rhodope and Central Stara Planina regions. By Sunday, temperatures in Sofia are forecast to drop to 20-21°C.
