Balkans heatwave, storms and floods persist
Overview
The severe July 18 storm that battered Croatia’s Adriatic coast set off a week‑long period of unsettled weather across the Balkans. On July 19 national services in Croatia, Bosnia‑Herzegovina and Serbia kept orange warnings for thunderstorms, heavy rain, hail and gusty winds, while a cold front pushed daytime temperatures 4‑8 °C below normal.
Romania escalated its alerts on July 19, issuing a red flood warning for Prahova and Dâmbovița counties as flash floods ripped roads, stranded vehicles and injured a pedestrian in Bușteni. Orange and red RO‑Alert codes later covered thunderstorms, hail and 90 km/h gusts, prompting evacuations, sandbag deployments and road blockages on the DN1 corridor.
Bulgaria released a yellow warning for July 21, covering 14 provinces with forecasts of heavy showers, hail and short‑duration flooding in mountainous areas. Macedonia faced heat‑driven temperatures up to 40 °C with localized thunderstorms, prompting fire services to deploy drones and intelligent cameras.
On July 21 a severe storm in Skopje toppled trees, damaged roofs and injured 15 people, while ESTOFEX issued a level‑3 supercell alert for July 21‑22 across southern Croatia, Bosnia‑Herzegovina, Montenegro, Serbia, Kosovo and Albania. The alert coincided with lightning‑induced livestock loss in Bosnia, hail‑driven crop damage in Nevesinje and a destructive wind gust episode in Pljevlja.
Kosovo’s meteorological institute warned of convective thunderstorms with heavy rain and hail on July 21, echoing the ESTOFEX red alert for the country. Romania experienced another wave of severe storms on July 22, flooding homes in Prahova, cutting power in Craiova and prompting widespread emergency responses. A cooler, rainy pattern was forecast for parts of Romania and Moldova on July 22, bringing temperatures below 25 °C and continued shower activity.
