Arab League and US Meet in Cairo to Advance Libya Political Process and Seek Sudan Ceasefire

Arab League Secretary‑General Nabil Fahmy and U.S. senior adviser for Arab and African affairs Massad Boulos held a high‑level meeting in Cairo on 18 July 2026. The two officials reviewed the latest developments in Libya and Sudan and reaffirmed their commitment to regional stability.

Both sides endorsed a Libyan‑led political process aimed at unifying the country’s institutions and holding presidential and parliamentary elections as soon as possible. The United States presented its assessment and proposals for supporting the Libyan pathway, while the Arab League pledged full backing for Libya’s unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity.

The discussion also focused on the war in Sudan, calling for an immediate ceasefire, unhindered humanitarian assistance and a comprehensive political settlement owned by Sudanese parties. The Arab League reiterated its support for Sudan’s unity and the protection of civilians, and the United States highlighted the importance of regular coordination to monitor progress.

Separate remarks from Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty, who met Boulos later, echoed the same priorities and added concerns over Nile water security, underscoring the broader regional implications of the two conflicts.
