Sudan civil war humanitarian crisis
Overview
The war between Sudan’s regular army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has evolved into a multi-year catastrophe. By August 2026, the humanitarian situation reached critical levels, with over 33 million people requiring aid. A UN investigative mechanism concluded that the RSF and allied militias committed genocide in Darfur, citing mass killings, gang rapes, and forced starvation.
In mid-August 2026, the conflict saw a significant escalation in drone warfare. The RSF launched coordinated drone strikes targeting airports and fuel storage, while fighting in Blue Nile State intensified as the RSF and SPLM-N seized the Bakori and Surkum military bases. By early September, reports emerged suggesting Israel provided covert intelligence and military assistance to the RSF.
By early September 2026, displacement and ethnic violence continued to escalate. In South Kordofan, the Sudan Doctors Network reported at least 26 deaths following two attacks. In Blue Nile State, the International Organization for Migration reported that over 3,300 people fled villages in the Qaisan locality on September 7. In North Darfur, approximately 1,275 people were displaced from the Ambra locality between September 3 and September 6.
On September 11, 2026, an RSF drone attack in the Al-Fath area, west of Omdurman, injured eight people, most of whom were children. Simultaneously, an AI research firm reported the disruption of a widespread influence campaign linked to United Arab Emirates government officials. The campaign reportedly used an AI persona named ‘Deadshot’ to generate social media posts and dossiers targeting UN experts who have criticized the UAE’s alleged involvement in the Sudan war. Meanwhile, an alliance of the RSF and an SPLM-N faction claimed to have captured villages in the Kurmuk locality of Blue Nile state, advancing toward Ed Damazin.
