Arab League Secretary-General Nabil Fahmi unveils five‑point reform plan

Nabil Fahmi, the newly appointed Secretary‑General of the Arab League, held his first press conference since taking office on 1 July 2026. He condemned Israel’s actions in Gaza and the West Bank as a continuous genocide and pledged the League’s legal support for accountability.

Fahmi outlined five strategic pathways for the Arab League’s next phase: (1) a more proactive diplomatic stance with early‑warning mechanisms and preventive diplomacy; (2) institutionalising a culture of follow‑up and implementation to ensure decisions are enacted; (3) restructuring the Secretariat to improve efficiency, accountability and performance evaluation; (4) investing in Arab talent, especially youth and women, and advancing digital tools and AI; and (5) linking policy with development, expanding participation and using economic integration as a stabilising shield. He reaffirmed the Palestinian issue and the status of Jerusalem as top priorities for the League.
