Aragón records 235 heat-related deaths during record summer

In Aragón, Spain, the Daily Mortality Monitoring system (MoMo) estimates that 235 deaths were attributable to high temperatures between June and September 2026. This period coincided with the warmest summer on record for the region, with average temperatures 3.4 degrees Celsius above the historical mean.

July was identified as the deadliest month, accounting for 109 estimated deaths. Other monthly figures included 45 in June, 65 in August, and 16 in September. The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) reported that the summer included 61 heatwave days, 64 tropical nights, and 23 days where temperatures exceeded 40 degrees Celsius.

The MoMo figures represent statistical estimates of mortality associated with recorded temperatures rather than deaths specifically certified as heatstroke. These findings have prompted calls to review alert thresholds and prevention plans for future high-risk seasons.
