Spain wildfires cause fatalities and massive agricultural damage

Spain is facing a severe summer of wildfires, with significant impacts in the regions of Aragón and Andalucía. In Aragón, the Las Peñas de Riglos fire has become one of the most destructive in recent history, contributing to a seasonal total of over 44,500 hectares burned. The fires in this region have necessitated the evacuation of approximately 2,800 people from 17 municipalities and resulted in the death of a firefighter from the Military Emergencies Unit (UME) following an accident near Peña Oroel.

In Andalucía, the wildfire season has also been lethal. A fire in Los Gallardos, Almería, resulted in 14 deaths, marking it as one of the deadliest incidents in the area. Additionally, a fire in Niebla has become the second largest by surface area burned in the province of Sevilla.

From an economic perspective, Agroseguro reports that 15,842 hectares of insured agricultural land have been affected so far in 2026. The organization has also recorded 593 insurance claims related to livestock farms. This current year already ranks as the second most significant year for agricultural damage due to fires in the last decade, following 2025.
