Aragon battles historic wildfires with 700 personnel

Aragon is experiencing its worst wildfire season in history, with more than 40,000 hectares burned in recent months. The most significant incident, the Las Peñas de Riglos fire, burned 14,500 hectares, contributing to a total of 18,000 hectares affected.

To combat the crisis, the region has deployed an operational force of over 700 people and more than 50 vehicles, utilizing both regional and state resources. The firefighting effort includes 62 ground brigades, eight heli-transported brigades, 350 nature protection agents, and 57 technical coordination staff. Additionally, nine helicopters are being used for extinction efforts.

Following the stabilization of the Las Peñas de Riglos fire, regional president Jorge Azcón acknowledged the need to increase operational capacity. He committed to a notable increase in the upcoming budget for environmental management and emergency services, which is expected to be approved at the end of the year.
