Aragon wildfire emergency response
Overview
A massive wildfire in the Aragon region of Spain has prompted a historic emergency response. The blaze has burned approximately 16,600 hectares, threatening the 1,000-year-old San Juan de la Peña monasteries and necessitating the evacuation of over 1,000 people.
Initial containment efforts involved more than 1,000 firefighters, including army members and specialized units from the Generalitat de Catalunya. To bolster the response, the European Union activated its Civil Protection Mechanism. By August 18, approximately 100 French firefighters from the Occitanie and Nouvelle-Aquitaine districts, along with 60 members of the Brigade des militaires de la Sécurité Civile, were deployed to the Las Peñas de Riglos area to assist local operations. A temporary base for the French detachment was established at the San Juan de la Peña school sports center in Jaca.
By August 23, the region reported experiencing its worst wildfire season in history, with more than 40,000 hectares burned in recent months. The Las Peñas de Riglos fire specifically accounted for 14,500 hectares of that total. To combat the ongoing crisis, Aragon has deployed an operational force of over 700 personnel and more than 50 vehicles, including 62 ground brigades, eight heli-transported brigades, 350 nature protection agents, and nine helicopters. Following the stabilization of the Las Peñas de Riglos fire, regional president Jorge Azcón committed to increasing the upcoming budget for environmental management and emergency services.
