Çarşamba Plain agricultural production shifts to poplar and hazelnut

The Çarşamba Plain, a major delta region in Türkiye irrigated by the Yeşilırmak River, is undergoing a significant agricultural transformation. Spanning 87,981 hectares, the plain was historically known for intensive vegetable and crop production, including tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, cucumbers, sugar beets, corn, and wheat.

Local producers report that traditional vegetable farming has declined sharply, with poplar and hazelnut cultivation becoming increasingly widespread. This shift has altered the landscape, leading locals to describe the area as more of a forest than a plain.

Farmers attribute this change to the closure of local industrial facilities, such as the sugar factory, which previously supported the cultivation of sugar beets. As a result, the region now relies on produce imported from other provinces and districts, such as Tokat and Bafra, to meet local demand.
