Colombia President orders probe into former First Lady's alleged drug trafficking

Colombian President Abelardo de la Espriella has ordered an exhaustive investigation into allegations of drug trafficking involving former First Lady Verónica Alcocer. The order follows reports from Semana magazine featuring an interview with Eva Ferrer, a former advisor to Alcocer. Ferrer claims that in January 2023, Alcocer used an official aircraft to transport drugs to Venezuela and returned to Colombia with 2.5 million dollars. The magazine reported records of 149 flights attributed to Alcocer during the administration of former President Gustavo Petro, many of which utilized state aircraft.

In response, the President instructed the Colombian Air Force to conduct an investigation through its Inspector General and counterintelligence units, specifically targeting personnel involved with the Military Air Transport Command (CATAM). De la Espriella also called upon the Prosecutor General, the Supreme Court, the Procuraduría, and United States authorities to review the information.

Separately, the Procuraduría General de la Nación has launched a disciplinary investigation into three officials from the Hospital San Vicente de Arauca. The probe concerns potential irregularities in the administration and supervision of a departmental ambulance aircraft (registration HK-5118) during the 2024 and 2025 periods, specifically regarding medicalized air transport services.
