Investigations into allegations against Verónica Alcocer

Overview

Former presidential advisor Eva Ferrer has accused Verónica Alcocer, the former first lady of Colombia and former partner of Gustavo Petro, of leading an illegal organization involved in trafficking money, drugs, and weapons. Ferrer alleged that in January 2023, Alcocer used official aircraft to transport $2.5 million in cash from Venezuela to Colombia. Additional claims include the collection of undeclared funds during the 2022 presidential campaign and involvement in money laundering operations in Spain and Italy. In response to these allegations, President Abelardo de la Espriella ordered an exhaustive investigation, instructing the Colombian Air Force to conduct a probe through its Inspector General and counterintelligence units, specifically targeting personnel within the Military Air Transport Command (CATAM). Justice Minister Iván Cancino stated that the government will respect the autonomy of the Attorney General's Office as it conducts necessary criminal and administrative inquiries. New allegations have emerged involving the physical assault of Angie Rodríguez, the former director of the Dapre, who confirmed that Alcocer treated her in a “denigrating manner” on two occasions. In response to the media coverage, former President Gustavo Petro has announced legal action against Semana magazine and its owner, Gabriel Gilinski, labeling the reports a “canallada” (outrage) and a smear campaign lacking documentary evidence. Petro noted that his daughters also intend to file lawsuits for moral damages. The Procuraduría General de la Nación has summoned Eva Ferrer and several others, including Rodríguez and Carmen Caballero, to testify under oath. Additionally, the Fiscalía has summoned Ferrer for a third time to investigate potential corruption. As investigations continue, Alcocer has denied all accusations. However, Ferrer has missed three scheduled summons from the Prosecutor's Office, claiming she is currently outside of Colombia due to increased security threats.
