Arbovirus cases rise in Pernambuco and Alagoas
Northeastern Brazilian states are reporting significant increases in arbovirus infections. In Pernambuco, suspected dengue cases reached 52,056 between January 4 and October 17, 2026, marking a 31.8% increase compared to the same period in 2025. Of these, 12,595 cases have been confirmed.
In Alagoas, more than 10,000 probable cases of arboviruses—including dengue, chikungunya, and zika—were recorded from January 1 to October 14, 2026, resulting in eight deaths. Dengue accounted for 7,366 probable cases and three deaths, while chikungunya saw 3,275 probable cases and five deaths. Zika cases remained low at 55.
Health authorities emphasize the importance of eliminating breeding sites for the Aedes aegypti mosquito. Recommended preventive measures include cleaning gutters, covering water reservoirs, emptying containers, and scrubbing surfaces to remove mosquito eggs.
