Brazil dengue & chikungunya control, mixed 2026 trends
Overview
Through early September 2026, Brazil’s public-health system continued intensified efforts to combat arboviruses, though local implementation faces logistical and environmental hurdles. In Votuporanga, São Paulo, officials reported that between January and August 19, over 67% of targeted properties were either closed or residents refused entry, prompting teams to attempt inspections during weekends and alternative hours. Meanwhile, in Ilhéus, health authorities intensified insecticide applications via backpack sprayers in the Hernani Sá and Banco da Vitória neighborhoods following confirmed chikungunya cases.
In the state of São Paulo, nineteen municipalities within the São José do Rio Preto regional health department have reached epidemic status, defined by incidence rates exceeding 300 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. While the Greater São Paulo area holds the highest absolute number of cases, the highest proportional risk is concentrated in the northwest, including Araçatuba, Presidente Prudente, and São José do Rio Preto. As of early September, the state has recorded over 58,000 confirmed cases and 41 deaths, a notable decrease from previous years.
Authorities are monitoring El Niño, as high temperatures and irregular rainfall facilitate mosquito breeding. Vaccination efforts for adolescents aged 10 to 14 using the Qdenga vaccine continue, while the Butantan-DV vaccine remains suspended pending investigations into adverse reactions.
Previous regional efforts included large-scale house visits in Campo Grande, mosquito egg identification in Três Lagoas, and managing divergent trends in Campinas and Sorriso.
