Overview

By late 2026, Brazil’s public-health system continued managing arbovirus risks despite a general decline in infection rates compared to 2025. A Ministry of Health survey (LIRAa) conducted between May and August revealed that 49.2% of 3,732 surveyed municipalities are at alert or risk levels for Aedes aegypti. While overall probable dengue cases fell 70% from 1.5 million in 2025 to 470,500 in 2026, chikungunya and zika cases also saw significant reductions of 43% and 35%, respectively.

Regional trends remain highly variable. In Mato Grosso, probable dengue cases fell 67% compared to 2025, though officials noted a 3.23% lethality rate among severe cases. Conversely, Campinas, São Paulo, is facing a significant outbreak with 4,131 confirmed cases, prompting a maximum alert in 32 neighborhoods. In Mato Grosso do Sul, Três Lagoas reported 113 confirmed cases of mosquito-borne diseases, including dengue, chikungunya, and zika.

In Goiás, authorities have intensified responses to a 343% surge in chikungunya, with the state reporting 108,673 confirmed dengue cases and 11,311 chikungunya cases. Efforts include deploying ovitraps, Larvicidal Disseminating Stations, and cleaning stream banks in Goiânia to mitigate both flood risks and mosquito breeding. Other local initiatives include Rio de Janeiro’s ‘SVS na Rua’ inspections across 16 neighborhoods, and community cleanup projects like ‘Bota-fora do Aedes’ in Nova Lima and the ‘Desapega’ project in Igrejinha.
