Arcadia hailstorm causes severe agricultural damage

Severe hailstorms struck the agricultural regions of the Tripolis Municipality in Arcadia on Sunday afternoon, August 30. The storm, which lasted approximately 10 minutes, featured hail stones the size of large walnuts, causing extensive damage to various crops.

Local farmers report significant losses, particularly in tomato production, which has seen near-total destruction. Other affected crops include cucumbers, green beans, broccoli, apples, and pears. Many of these crops were already in the final stages of harvest, meaning producers had already invested heavily in seeds, fertilizers, and labor, leading to fears of total income loss for the season.

Officials from ELGA (Hellenic Agricultural Insurance Organization) have begun inspections in the communities of Pallandio, Thana, and Makri to document and assess the extent of the damage. The Tripolis Municipality is calling for an expedited process to ensure that compensation for affected farmers is processed without delay.
