Greek agricultural damage from hailstorms

Overview

Agricultural production in Greece has been impacted by severe weather events. In late July, a hailstorm damaged specific pear varieties, such as Santa Maria and Blanquilla, with damage rates averaging approximately 30%. While overall harvest volumes were initially projected to be 30% higher than the previous year, the lack of widespread hail protection nets meant the industry had to absorb these losses, leading to expected export volumes similar to the prior year.

On August 30, further severe hailstorms struck the Tripolis Municipality in Arcadia. These storms, characterized by walnut-sized hail, caused extensive destruction to various crops including tomatoes, cucumbers, green beans, broccoli, apples, and pears. Many of these crops were in the final stages of harvest, leading to significant fears of total income loss for local producers. The Hellenic Agricultural Insurance Organization (ELGA) has initiated inspections in the communities of Pallandio, Thana, and Makri to assess the damage and facilitate compensation.
