ArcelorMittal suspends Ukraine steel plant operations after missile strikes
ArcelorMittal has announced the indefinite suspension of all operations at its Kryvyi Rih steel plant in Ukraine. The decision follows a series of four Russian missile strikes occurring over a five-week period, the most recent of which took place on September 21.
The attacks caused significant damage to production facilities and resulted in the deaths of five employees and injuries to 17 others. Due to the extensive damage to infrastructure, the company stated that safe and sustainable operations are no longer possible. ArcelorMittal expects to record an accounting write-down of approximately $1 billion related to the damages at the site.
The shutdown represents a major blow to the Ukrainian steel sector, which has historically contributed significantly to the nation's exports. The company noted that it has provided over $700 million to support its Ukrainian operations since the beginning of the war. Management is currently negotiating with the Ukrainian government to focus on preserving existing infrastructure in hopes of resuming production once peace is restored.
