ArcelorMittal launches green steel platform and faces energy cost concerns
ArcelorMittal and the energy company Moeve have launched a joint innovation platform called ‘Green Molecules to Green Steel’ (G2G) to decarbonize steel production. The partnership, held equally by both companies, focuses on using green molecules—such as renewable hydrogen, biogas, biomethane, and second-generation biofuels—as energy carriers to reduce CO₂ emissions. The initiative, which also involves the Asturian agency Sekuens, aims to test these technologies in industrial demonstration projects before scaling them to full production.
In a separate development regarding the German steel industry, Brandenburg Economic Minister Martina Klement visited ArcelorMittal in Eisenhüttenstadt. During the visit, Rainer Böse, ArcelorMittal’s head of Germany, highlighted significant challenges facing the sector, including high energy costs, infrastructure deficits, and international competitive disadvantages. Böse stated that a electricity price of 50 euros per megawatt-hour is necessary to maintain competitiveness. He also cited unreliable rail freight services and the lack of a cohesive political concept regarding the phase-out of free CO₂ certificates and investment incentives as major hurdles for the industry's transformation.
