European steel industry green transition
Overview
European steel producers are implementing various strategies to decarbonize production through green technology investments and partnerships.
In Austria, Voestalpine has initiated a 1.5 billion euro ‘greentec steel’ project to modernize its Linz facility. This involves constructing a new electric arc furnace (EAF) that utilizes electricity to melt scrap or directly reduced iron, aiming to replace traditional coke and coal-based methods. The company expects these furnaces to be operational in the first half of 2027.
Concurrently, ArcelorMittal and Moeve have launched the ‘Green Molecules to Green Steel’ (G2G) platform. This joint initiative focuses on testing renewable hydrogen, biogas, and biofuels as energy carriers to reduce emissions. However, the transition faces industrial hurdles; ArcelorMittal leadership in Germany has highlighted high energy costs, infrastructure deficits, and the lack of cohesive political incentives as significant challenges to maintaining international competitiveness.
