ArcelorMittal suspends production at Ukraine's largest steel plant

Russian ballistic missile attacks have severely impacted Ukraine’s steel industry, forcing the suspension of operations at major metallurgical facilities. ArcelorMittal has halted production at its Kryvyi Rih plant, the largest steel mill in Ukraine, following four missile strikes within a five-week period. The company stated it can no longer manage the facility safely and is discussing the future of the site with the Ukrainian government to preserve infrastructure for potential future recovery.

The strikes have resulted in human casualties, including five deaths and 17 injuries. Beyond the immediate loss of life, the economic impact is substantial; ArcelorMittal anticipates a deterioration in asset value of approximately US$1 billion. The complex, which integrates mining and metallurgical activities, previously provided over 20,000 jobs.

In addition to ArcelorMittal, the industry faces broader instability as Russian strikes have also targeted facilities owned by Metinvest. These attacks on blast furnaces and industrial infrastructure have placed the country’s entire steel sector at risk, with the duration of necessary repairs remaining uncertain.
