Archaeological discoveries reported during construction in Costa Rica and Chile

Archaeological and historical investigations are underway following discoveries during construction projects in Costa Rica and Chile.

In Costa Rica, the Ministry of Culture and Youth dispatched specialists to the Liceo Rural Buena Vista in Pérez Zeledón. The inspection follows the discovery of materials that may have archaeological significance during school reconstruction works. The National Museum will evaluate the site to determine the extent and nature of the finds, which will dictate whether a specific archaeological rescue is required under national heritage laws.

In Chile, the Homicide Brigade of the Investigations Police (PDI) and the O’Higgins Regional Prosecutor's Office are investigating the discovery of skeletal remains behind the sacristy of the Rancagua Cathedral. The remains were found during restructuring work and are currently covered by concrete. The National Monuments Council (CMN) will perform a methodological extraction to prevent damage to the remains, followed by an archaeological rescue to identify associated objects or further remains.
