Archaeologists convene in Kahramanmaraş for prehistoric pottery workshop

Archaeologists from various nations gathered in Kahramanmaraş for the International Workshop on Prehistoric Pottery in Upper Mesopotamia and Beyond. Hosted by the Kahramanmaraş Metropolitan Municipality in collaboration with the Governor's Office, the Provincial Directorate of Culture and Tourism, Hacettepe University, Koç University, and the Netherlands Institute for Near Eastern Studies, the event focused on the ceramic production traditions and regional interactions of prehistoric societies.

Key presentations included insights from Iranian archaeologist Hojjat Darabi on early Mesopotamian ceramics in the South and Central Zagros foothills, and Spanish expert Anna Bach Gomez on Halaf period settlements in northern Iraq. Japanese archaeologists Masanori Oda and Takahiro Odaka discussed Halaf pottery and Late Neolithic traditions in the Zagros Piedmont and Shahrizor Plain, respectively. Turkish archaeologist Ayşe Tuba Ökse also presented findings regarding Chalcolithic traces in the Upper Tigris Valley, highlighting how archaeological data provides clues about ancient living spaces.
