Archbishop Jorge García Cuerva urges action on poverty in Argentina

Archbishop Jorge García Cuerva of Buenos Aires delivered a homily at the San Patricio church in the Belgrano neighbourhood, commemorating the 50th anniversary of the 1976 killing of five priests and seminarians. He called for a stronger social commitment, urging society not to be indifferent to the "agony of unemployment, the affliction of poverty, the pain of the sick, the loneliness of our elders and the suffering of those on the streets," and warned against cruelty and individualism.

The remarks, interpreted as criticism of President Javier Milei’s government, coincided with a Torcuato Di Tella University study reporting that Argentine poverty rose to 30% in the first half of 2026, two points higher than the previous semester. García Cuerva urged political leaders and the community to increase solidarity and support for the country’s most vulnerable citizens.
