Milei reforms persist amid fiscal deficit
Overview
President Javier Milei continues to drive an aggressive reform agenda despite low and only modestly stabilising public support, which hovered near 30 % in July 2026 polls. The government completed its judicial reshuffle in July and has enacted a labour‑market law that cuts severance costs and creates an employer‑financed fund. Parallel deregulation efforts target customs and real‑estate sectors, while a draft “shutdown” mechanism—modelled on the U.S. budget‑closure process—remains under consideration to suspend non‑essential spending if the budget balance is threatened.
Legislative negotiations have intensified after the Senate failed to secure enough votes for the property‑rights bill, prompting Milei to seek concessions from the PRO bloc and other groups. In June, Argentina recorded a primary fiscal deficit of roughly $696 million, driven by seasonal payroll payments and delayed tax filings, causing the state to miss the IMF‑mandated surplus target for the first half of 2026. Officials are weighing a request for an IMF waiver while the central bank has accumulated about $13 billion in reserves.
Inflation fell to 1.9 % month‑on‑month in June, the first sub‑2 % reading, though the annual rate stays near 16.8 %. Fiscal tightening has sharply reduced education funding, with real‑term cuts of over 40 %.
Milei’s allies are also outlining a re‑election strategy for 2027 to cement political alliances and secure a mandate for continued economic reforms.
