Pope Leo XIV visit to Argentina sparks social concerns and housing boom

Pope Leo XIV is scheduled to visit Argentina from November 8 to 11, traveling through Buenos Aires, Córdoba, and Luján. The visit has triggered significant social and economic reactions across the country.

Archbishop Jorge García Cuerva of Buenos Aires has warned that the Pontiff will arrive in an Argentina marked by deep political polarization, social division, and persistent poverty. He described the nation as “wounded” and noted that intolerance and disqualification are prevalent in current social discourse. While acknowledging the resilience of working Argentines, the Archbishop emphasized that the country has been in a state of crisis for many years.

In Luján, the anticipated mass of up to two million people for the papal mass on November 11 has caused a local accommodation crisis. Traditional hotels are fully booked, leading to an informal rental market where prices have reached as high as 14 million pesos per night for houses, and hundreds of thousands of pesos for garden spaces to pitch tents.

Preparations are also underway for religious and security logistics. In Córdoba, authorities are coordinating a unified security command for the Pope's visit. Additionally, the Don Bosco wine from Mendoza has been selected for use during the liturgical celebrations in Córdoba.
