Pope Leo XIV health update and South American tour planning
Overview
Pope Leo XIV is recovering from a video-assisted procedure on October 13 to remove the lower lobe of his right lung to treat pulmonary adenocarcinoma. Following his discharge from the Agostino Gemelli Polyclinic on October 17, the 71-year-old Pope held his first general audience in St. Peter’s Square on October 22. Medical evaluations confirmed the tumor was localized, meaning the Pope will require no chemotherapy, radiotherapy, or immunotherapy.
Following assessments by his personal physician, Luigi Carbone, and surgeon Stefano Margaritora, Vatican doctors have officially cleared the Pope to proceed with his scheduled South American tour from November 6 to 17. The trip, covering Uruguay, Argentina, and Peru, will involve approximately 36 speeches across 10 cities and roughly 31,000 kilometers of travel. While he previously canceled a trip to Assisi to avoid helicopter travel during recovery, the South American itinerary remains intact despite including high-altitude stops like Cusco.
In Argentina, the visit from November 8 to 11 includes a mass at the Fábrica Argentina de Aviones in Córdoba, a visit to Pequeño Cottolengo Don Orione in Claypole, and a concluding mass at the Basilica of Our Lady of Luján.
In Peru, security and logistical preparations are being finalized for visits to Lima, Callao, Chiclayo, Cusco, and Pucallpa. The Peruvian Air Force will deploy an anti-drone system using sensors and electromagnetic perturbation to neutralize unauthorized drones. In Cusco, the Alejandro Velasco Astete International Airport will suspend flight operations for over seven hours on November 15. In Lima, a final Mass is planned for November 16 at the Las Palmas Air Base, with an expected attendance of up to 1.2 million people.
