Archbishop Sarah Mullally begins pastoral visit to Cameroon’s anglophone regions

Archbishop of Canterbury Sarah Mullally arrived in Cameroon on 31 July for a five‑day pastoral tour, following a stop in Ghana. Her itinerary includes the capital Yaoundé, the port city Douala and the anglophone towns of Buea and Limbe in the conflicted Southwest region. Mullally, the first Anglican leader to visit the country since her contested appointment, was welcomed at the airport by Cameroon’s Minister of Territorial Administration Paul Atanga Nji and Anglican Bishop Thomas Babyngton Elango, and received a bouquet of flowers.

During the visit she emphasized prayer, reconciliation and lasting peace for the anglophone zones that have suffered a decade‑long separatist conflict. The trip also highlights tensions within the global Anglican Communion, as several African provinces have opposed her leadership over issues such as same‑sex marriage blessings and the ordination of women, despite representing more than 75 % of the church’s worldwide membership.
